"Behind the scenes" of remote satellite interviews with Colin Firth

to promote "What A Girl Wants"

Please do not upload this video to another website / community / forum!

1 hour and 16 minutes long!

With thanks to Cait

You will hear Colin doing the interviews with several media (tv and audio). You will hear him discuss "What A Girl Wants" (of course), Amanda Bynes, Kelly Preston,"Girl With A Pearl Earring", "Trauma", the war in Iraq, Hamlet, plans for a Bridget Jones's Diary sequel, playing air-guitar and his kids. You will also get to hear and see him "between" interviews (making remarks, getting annoyed (especially when they start to ask him political questions), hear him sigh, etc).

You will not hear the questions asked by the interviewers, because you will only hear and see his part of the interviews (remember these were "remote satellite" interviews). In the background you will see the Palace of Westminister: Houses of Parliament and the Big Ben in London.

***

These interviews were one of the very few things Colin did to promote "What A Girl Wants". Colin and Kelly Preston were rebelling against plans to stage the premiere "What A Girl Wants" during wartime (war in Iraq, which had just started) by pulling out of press junkets for the film. (March 29, 2003) Colin never attended a premiere for this movie!

Some of Firth's fervid fans showed up unannounced during filming. "We had stalkers on the set," Gordon (director) says. "One woman shows up everywhere he goes. She's very proper in her little red suit. He sees her and says, 'My stalker's here,' and goes over and says, 'Hello, how are you?'"

Amanda Bynes on Colin Firth:

"I thought it was cute but I didn't know if I wanted to do a movie. Then I heard Colin Firth was interested and I was like 'What? He's interested? Let me look at that again.'...When I found out Colin was doing it I was shocked that he would be near me, let alone do a movie with me. He was amazing.

Even better than I thought he would be. He's down to earth and has such a good sense of humor and is so charming and such a lovely guy."

Sharing the screen with Firth taught Bynes about the craft of acting.

"There's no exact 'how to' but he's so natural that when he does it, I don't ever see him studying lines but he always brings something to it. He's hard on himself and will do the take 50 times and make sure it's right. Having that type of commitment and stamina is really impressive and is really a good role model and something good

Memorable Quotes from "What A Girl Wants":

Jocelyn Dashwood: No hugging dear. I'm British, we only show affection to dogs and horses.

Libby Reynolds: I love you a million Swedish Fish.

Daphne Reynolds: I love you a million red M&M's.

Clarissa: Oh very you, lovely. So Henry asked us to give to give you a few pointers, didn't he? Well, Pointer number 1 go home, mother and I belong here and it's quite clear you just don't fit in. And Pointer number 2 while you're packing, keep your grimy little yanky paws off Armistead Stuart, he's mine.

Daphne Reynolds: If you take your nose out of the air for one second you'll see you're designer, I'm vintage. You've got a mansion, I've got a five floor walkup. You're a snotty little miss cranky pants and I go with the flow, so why would you ever think for one second that I'd ever have the same taste in guys. So here's a little pointer for you. Get over yourself and stop trying to be my daddy's little girl because I'm not going anywhere.

Daphne Reynolds: [to Clarissa] My evil step sister, you've seen Cinderella, right, let me clue you in, I win.

Glynnis Payne: Now Daphne, we don't want to make a scene now, do we?

Libby Reynolds: Take your hand off my daughter or you won't get a scene, you'll get a Broadway Musical!

Henry Dashwood: I'm sorry, I...

Libby Reynolds: Do you think I've waited 17 years for an apology?

Daphne Reynolds: Every year I would wish if that I was good enough you would come and find me.

Henry Dashwood: You like Co-co Puffs?

Daphne Reynolds: It's chocolate! Need I say more?

Glynnis Payne: Darling, darling, all I'm saying is before we let this hypothetical daughter blow your political career out of the water, we might at least consider doing some checking up on her.

Henry Dashwood: Now, checking up for what?

Glynnis Payne: I don't know... criminal record, blood type, triple sixes on her skull.

Henry Dashwood: Glynnis, she has a birth certificate, she has my photograph and she has my eyes.

Henry Dashwood: I'm not explaining this very well am I.

Daphne Reynolds: No, not really. But I'm having fun watching you try.

Henry Dashwood: I hope you find you sleeping arrangements conducive to...

Daphne Reynolds: Henry, all it takes is sweet dreams.

From The Times, 25 August 2002: We meet in Battersea Park, London, on the set of the big-budget Warner Brothers comedy London Girl, [What a Girl Wants] a remake of Vincente Minnelli's The Reluctant Debutante. It's Firth's first work after a seven-month 'break' of sleepless nights and nappy-changing, but its star seems less than thrilled with the studio product, where rushes are beamed back to LA for corporate approval. It's fine, he says neutrally, Eileen Atkins and Jonathan Pryce are in it. But reading between the lines, he took it for the money and because staying close to home matters.
